“NO TO THE MINE!
In the last 10 years, we recorded the work routine and the life of miners around the world.
As journalists, we were interested in knowing what there was in common between miners who worked in such different places as Potosí (Bolivia), Ijen Volcano (Java Island, Indonesia), North Kivu (Democratic Republic of Congo) and Serra Pelada (Brazil). Some characteristics were always present in the areas we researched: suffering, diseases acquired from work in the mine, poverty and destruction of the environment and nearby communities.
In places like the Democratic Republic of Congo, exploration for gold and col-tan has fomented a civil war which has taken 5 million lives. In Potosí, in the Bolivian Andes, silicosis, a terrifying disease which compromises the respiratory system, condemns hundreds of ex-miners to an agonizing death.
The results of this investigation show that the inhabitants of places where mines are set up are the primary victims of the exploration. Multinational mining companies make lots of money and leave in their path nothing more than diseases and contamination from heavy metals.
